202012 - A Smooth Ride into the West End
How accessible travel changed my London experience
Letter ID: LON-202012
Dear London,
People often talk about the Underground like a system that it is failing us Londoners most of the time – unpleasant journeys, high fares, nothing but stress. But as a disabled person who uses the tube occasionally my experiences have been different.
A recent journey started in Stratford, a place that already feels like a small victory for disabled travellers. Step-free access. Wide platforms. Lifts that actually work. From there, I boarded the Elizabeth line, heading into the West End for a day out on Oxford Street. Just saying that still feels special. There was a time when trips like this felt more like dreams than plans.
The train itself was smooth, quiet, and easy to board. No rushing. No awkward gaps. No feeling like I was in the way. For once, I was just another passenger heading into town.
When we arrived at Bond Street, I braced myself. Big station. Busy area. Usually, this is where things get complicated. But instead of stairs and stress, I found lifts. Clear signs. Space to move. I went from platform to platform, and then all the way up to street level, without needing help from staff or strangers. No awkward moments. No feeling like a burden. Just independence.
Stepping out onto Oxford Street, I felt something I don’t always feel when travelling in London. Confidence.
I could choose where to go. I could take my time. I could enjoy the city instead of worrying about how to survive it.
The Underground is often criticised. People talk about delays, crowds, and broken systems. But from where I’m sitting, literally and figuratively, it also deserves praise. Because when it works for people like me, it does more than move us from A to B. It gives us freedom.
Freedom to explore.
Freedom to socialise.
Freedom to feel like we belong in the city too.
Today’s journey reminded me that accessible transport is not a luxury. It is a lifeline.
So, thank you to TfL for making this trip smooth, simple, and stress-free. You helped turn a complicated day into an easy one, and an anxious traveller into a confident Londoner.
Regards,
Lauren E - A grateful passenger
